Alex Humen.

Ukrainian native · 2nd-degree black belt under Professor Diego Bispo

Professor Alex Humen brings deep experience in freestyle wrestling, pankration, and amateur MMA to every class he leads.

He began wrestling at twelve in Ukraine, earned a scholarship and a biology-technology degree, and discovered grappling abroad before moving to the United States in 2013 — where he earned his blue belt in just five months and competed in several cage fights.

After years coaching adults and kids at UFC Gym in Virginia Beach and Norfolk, Alex founded Brabo Academy in May 2022, fulfilling his dream. He has two daughters who train and compete locally and internationally.

Jake Stremmel

Youth & Adult Instructor

Jake began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2016 and holds a Black Belt under Professor Alex Humen. He coaches both Youth and Adult classes while staying an active competitor.

A graduate of Old Dominion University (B.A. Psychology), he also pursued a Master's in Applied Behavior Analysis at Arizona State University.

Doug Stambaugh

Morning & Noon Instructor

A Brown Belt under Professor Alex Humen, Doug began training in 2016 at UFC Gym Virginia Beach and serves as one of Brabo's morning instructors.

Proudly served as

  • Virginia Beach Firefighter

Today he teaches morning and noon adult classes and assists with youth programs — his leadership, discipline, and service background make him invaluable to the team.

Julio "Jay" Javier

Morning Instructor

A Navy Veteran and Brown Belt under Professor Alex Humen, Jay began training in 2016 alongside his children to improve his health — a fitness journey that quickly became a passion for Jiu-Jitsu.

Today he teaches the 6:00 AM Adult Class, helping students build confidence, discipline, and technical skill, and continues to compete locally while mentoring the next generation.

At just 18, Marissa has already built an impressive résumé. She began training in 2017 at UFC Gym Norfolk alongside her two siblings and holds a Purple Belt under Professor Alex Humen — coaching the Kids Program while competing in juvenile and adult divisions.

Mark Crews — Purple Belt. A full-time pastor, Mark began training in 2021 with his whole family under Professor Alex. He competes locally and coaches Little Grapplers and Youth programs.

Christina Crews — Purple Belt. Started training for self-defense and to support her kids; now a Purple Belt and youth coach focused on a positive, encouraging environment.

Elias Crews — Blue Belt. Training since 2020 and now 16, an accomplished competitor (IBJJF Pan Kids, NAGA, Grappling Industries, Fuji, AGF) who coaches youth alongside his parents.
